Established in 1981 by Jeffrey Grosset in the historic township of Auburn in the southern tip of the Clare Valley 100 kilometres north of Adelaide, the winery is stylish but functional and reflects the attention to detail that extends to the Grosset estate-owned Clare Valley vineyards and to the winemaking.

 Knappstein Winery of Clare Valley, South Australia is one of the most recognizable popular Clare Valley wineries. A small producer of premium quality wines who manage their own vineyard, harvest the fruit at vintage and make and sell wine. Knappstein is located in the original nineteenth century Enterprise Brewery, itself a National Trust building and the landmark of the Clare township.
Knappstein Hand Picked Riesling, consistently rated amongst Australia's finest, has a spine of lime citrus typical of Clare Riesling and floral notes attributable to the location of the vineyard in the Watervale area. |

 The Clare Valley, set in the folds of the Mount Lofty Ranges 140 kilometres north of Adelaide, has a 140-year history of successful wine-grape growing. In 1893 a group of South Australian professional and business men founded The Stanley Wine Company at Clare to produce high quality red and white wines. Subsequent generations of wine drinkers and wine judges have applauded their decision and confirmed their hopes.
Originally there were four pioneers : J.H. (Joseph) Knappstein, a merchant, Dr O. Wein-Smith, a medical practitioner of Clare, Magnus Badger, a solicitor, and John Cristion, who was a brewer of note. Alfred Basedow was employed as a General Manager and Winemaker, having learned the craft of winemaking in Europe. The name Stanley was chosen to identify the company with the local electoral district of Stanley.
Today the name Leasingham is reserved for premium wines only. The Stanley name continues on a range of wine casks produced at the Buronga winery. |

 David O'Leary and Nick Walker both have a love of winemaking, a desire to create something exceptional and a strong affinity with the Australian wine industry.
After working for large companies for twenty years and amassing over 300 gold medals and 60 trophies(including a Jimmy Watson and twice International Red Wine Maker of the Year), David and Nick had achieved just about everything that a winemaker could.
A new challenge beckoned and David and Nick's belief in their winemaking skills and their confidence in the fruit and the vineyards available to them was the catalyst for them to establish their own venture based in South Australia's picturesque Clare Valley.
As with all things in life, a window of opportunity opens only a few times and they believed it was their turn to step up, have a go and return to what winemaking is all about, making great wine from great vineyard sites.
